No plans to close Funoon channel

An official at a Kuwaiti TV channel denied local media reports regarding the channel's closure. The official made his statements after a news website quoted sources at the Ministry of Information that the head of Funoon TV, a Kuwaiti comedy channel, filed a request to close the channel.
There is no intention to close the channel whatsoever," said Hamad Abdallah, head of the channel's production division. "I heard the news and I don't know on what basis the news was made," he added. Informed sources inside the United National Media Company, the media corporation that owns the channel, said that the administration considered closing the Funoon Plus channel, a delayed version of the channel broadcast on Arabsat satellite.
Sources said that the reason was because of high broadcasting costs in addition to the small number of viewers using the channel. "The same content is broadcast via Nilesat and few people watch the channel on Arabsat. There was a plan a few months ago to close Funoon plus and maybe even Adalah Two," the source said.
Hamad Abdallah denied the reports, calling them "baseless rumors," and assured that the administration of the corporation has not planned to cloase any channels. "As a media corporation, we are stable and not facing any difficulty. All of our channels are functioning properly and there are no plans to close any channel in the future," Abdallah asserted.
The news raises questions regarding the way local media deals with rumors. Kuwaiti media has repeatedly been accused of instigating sectarian hatred and irresponsible reporting of events. The news came out two months after the Kuwaiti daily, Awan, closed down, which was the latest in a series of closures among Kuwaiti newspapers.
The media industry in Kuwait witnessed a boom following amendments made to both the press and publication law, as well as the so called 'audio-visual' law, in 2006. The amendments allowed the establishment of new media outlets in the country, which was followed by a mushrooming of dozens of privately-owned TV channels and 17 newspapers.
